Nitronic Rush: Including End of the World Update (#5)!

> Download the Game
> Download the Soundtrack

Nitronic Rush is an experimental survival driving game. Using the car’s many abilities (including boost, wings, and jump), avoid obstacles that the city throws at you. In many ways the game is a tribute to racing games of the 1990s but with fresh graphics, audio, and gameplay.

Just fired it up. Got some bizarre pixellation in the menu, and when I ran the game tutorial, it’s like when you noclip out of a game level; polygons stretched everywhere, vision nearly completely blocked by visual errors and unplayable. I could only see the road when facing the left side of the track. Toggling bloom, blur and changing resolutions didn’t help, and neither did compatibility options.

I have an i5 2.4GHz quad core CPU, 4gb of RAM and an ATi Mobility Radeon HD 5450 with 2.7gb of GRAM, and my resolution is 1336×768. I’m running Windows 7 64bit.
The game runs completely smooth, so I don’t think it’s the requirements.

Not sure if anyone else is having this issue.

  6. Xordac Prime says:

Game looks awesome, first attempt to d/l failed. I am trying the torrent and will seed the game for a week or 2 to help out.
Things I would like to see:
    1. A Donation Page where people can donate for the game.
    2. A linux version
    3. Open source the code so it can be worked on by community (expansions, mods, etc)

    • SataMaxx says:

The game can be run in wine with a few tricks : configure wine so that it uses a virtual windows desktop (otherwise there are problems with the display size), and the keyboard doesn’t seem to function, but you can work around this using a xbox360 controller (or controller emulator). The last thing remaining is an annoying lag (<1 fps) when crashing, but surprisingly not when suiciding or falling off. All in all, it's very playable, although I'd still enjoy an native version (but the game seems to use directx and not opengl, so the port would not be easy…)

      • Bestia says:

I’ve also tried running it through Wine and I didn’t need to use virtual desktop (in GNOME Shell). Although the game set very strange resolution in it’s .ini file (/config/nitronic.ini) 9999×9999 so I’ve changed it to something sane. You can get keyboard and mouse input to work by compiling Wine with patch for the Raw Input:

Use the raw3.patch and don’t forget to execute ./tools/make_requests before starting compilation.

I can also confirm that when you crash game starts a slideshow. I also see flickering black squares and rectangles (possibly I should add some d3dx9 library or disable GLSL).

  7. EMO says:

Oh man I love this game, I’ve been craving a racing-style game with an art style just like this and I enjoyed every level. I like how much control the player has over the car and the smooth driving feeling. If it were on steam I’d pay for it immediately.

It would be fantastic if you could add split screen and maybe online head-to-head, ohh mann.

Great job on this game guys.

  8. norm says:

Does not support controllers other than the XBox 360, does not run well windowed, mouse looses focus in window.

  9. Why? says:

I have downloaded it twice and when I click the installer it just freezes or does not respond. I want to play this game very badly is there some way to fix this? 🙁

  10. Joey says:

Game only appears on the upper-left corner of the screen. The menus are full screen however. Latest Nvidia driver is installed. Can’t see track, just background like what is behind track. Everything else is in a square in top corner of screen, nothing else is being rendered. Nvidia 570 video card.

  11. Crazyewolf says:

I simply hate my computer!! it shows the menu then goes black-white-black-white-black-white Ugh!!

  12. ProfLX says:

Game’s great, where can we get the soundtrack!?

  13. Anonymous says:

Awesome game, would be fantastic if you guys could add a Multiplayer LAN race mode

  14. SomeGuyWithInternetAccess says:

It’s very impressive that this game was developed without the use of third-party engines. The music really compliments the other elements of the game (I echo ProfLX’s comment about the soundtrack). Overall, it feels very unified and it’s quite a bit of fun.

However, I can’t figure out how to make the jump at the start of the “Advanced Topics” track; I’ve tried pressing space at various points along the ramp (e.g., near the middle, right at the end, etc.) and it either has no discernible effect or reduces the length of my jump. Any tips would be appreciated!

    • SgtLz says:

If you use the boost while driving upwards, you can make the car hover up a bit.
With the van it goes even faster.

Also, am I the only one who would LOVE a joyride mode and a level editor for this?
Flying around a flat open field without heat limitations would be loads of fun, as much as making levels and sharing them with the community

      • SomeGuyWithInternetAccess says:

It appears that pressing space on a ramp while boosting only increases jump distance if the accelerator key (i.e., the up arrow) isn’t being held down at the same time. Perhaps this is a bug (albeit one that’s easy to work around).

At any rate, some of those advanced tracks are pretty crazy! If this game could be crossed with Trackmania, that would be a truly stupendous experience.

        • SgtLz says:

The Arrow Keys also work for steering the car, albeit slower than the Stunt Thrusters. By holding down UP, you’re basically pushing the car’s nose DOWN, and in turn, losing height, very quickly.

You should ALWAYS keep the car’s nose up if doing a boosted jump.

  15. redrik says:

amazing!!!!! i love the spins and the fly thing

  16. S says:

Put this on Steam, make normal price, I def buy this!

  17. Jojoh says:

    Brilliant game!

One of the absolute best freewares out there. Nice graphical style and music and sound is superb as well.

I actually though that “Old tracks” or what it was called was the best ones. More speed and flow in those tracks!

  18. Eksiten says:

Add a level editor and I am in love. More so than I already am, anyway. Would happily pay something for a fuller version.

Runs perfectly on my GTX 560.

  19. jason says:

is there any way to use a ps3 controller instead?

  20. Christian says:

Thanks for this neat game! Looks and sounds great, I like the combination of different game mechanics.

  21. Eksiten says:

I seem to have accidentally triplicated my score on Hardcore Black! The server was busy and I was having trouble uploading it, and when it finished I suddenly found myself with first, second, AND third…

Also, I’d be interested to know who EJP is.

  22. Stantom says:

Great Game, really. What about a LEVEL Editor? Or releasing its source-code? Open it to the community and sell it for 10 bucks on steam and u will get rich! really!

  23. ZONA says:

Really enjoyed this game all the aspects of the game. Still working on the challenge levels.
Would most definitely be willing to spend money on this if it got multiplayer.

  24. Newsblok says:

Really fun game, good job guys. I hope you get more recognition now that TotalBiscuit has done a video for the game and I have to agree with his conclusion, I would definitely pay a few quid for this game.

You should pop up a paypal donate button, for future games development or something.

  25. ZenHedge says:

Norton AntiVirus keeps yelling at me about downloading this and keeps removing it from my system. Is it virus-loaded, or is Norton just being stupid? If so, how can I fix this?

  26. reiska says:

Awesome game and thanks to TotalBiscuit I found it!

  27. Noru212 says:

    This. Game. Is. AWESOME!!!

  28. […] can download it for free! Posted in Uncategorized | Permalink. ← Skyrim […]

  29. Shaz says:

Great. It’s like having an orgasm every few minutes.

Also, it appears that, due to keyboard limitations, trying to jump while holding “e” rather than shift produces ghosting, as far as I’ve seen.

  30. LAP87 says:

I love this game, would love it more if there was some kind of LAN/Net capabilities aswell! <3

  31. Anonymous says:

    MULTIPLAYER! Please.

  32. Will says:

I downloaded the game to a USB port. It works on my laptop where I dowloaded it at, but when I take the USB elsewhere it won’t load up the game and it says ‘the application fsiled to start because d3dx9x_43.dll was not found.

  33. kinetic says:

Am dying to play this game but for some reason NR keeps showing an error message and then crashes on startup…is anyone else having this problem? All other games work fine except this one…have uninstalled several times and even downloaded from other sites in case it was a corrupted file or something but to no avail. Any help?

What happend “Team Nitronic”, is a false positive?, or “Trojan.Malware.Win32.xPack.g” is contained in this game.

Thanks for your time and greetings from Colombia.

    • Anonymous Pit Viper says:

Digipen held no responsibility for any malware attaching itself to the download, and any malware that happens to get to your end is not Digipen’s work. I would just quarantine everything that happens to be malicious, and search them up on the Internet for the complete removal. And then perhaps tell Team Nitronic that a trojan attached to your download so they can note it.

Excellent job on a most awesometastic stunt-driving game. It’s worth the download and hopefully more updates/levels to come in the future.

  45. Hjalti Leifsson says:

I’m listening to the soundtrack now and I really like how a lot of the tracks flow into each other. The tracks themselves thankfully don’t outstay their welcome and they all each have their own feel to them. I really dig the mix of old and new sounds you have going on, dancy but always melodic.

Though I must admit I much prefer Torcht’s half then The Quiggles’, they’re a bit overblown for my tastes. 😛

  46. Tomiku says:

I downloaded this a while back and played it, and loved it. Came back to it just recently and downloaded the updated version, getting a lot of glitches and oddities I didn’t get before. Biggest one is if I try to turn off bloom, rather than actually getting rid of it, it just stops updating, so I have a ghosty fuzzy image of whatever was onscreen when I turned off the option. I tried restarting the game to get rid of the afterimage but it turned bloom back on when I started it back up, so I can’t get rid of it. Controls also feel really sluggish but that may be related to the game seeming to just run slower than it did before in general, and that part MIGHT be on my end, I don’t know. I’m gonna try redownloading and reinstalling to see if it does anything.
